Clinical trial
A study that tests a treatment in people, in phases from small safety tests to large comparisons.
Before a medicine is approved it is tested in people in phases. Phase 1 checks safety in a small group, phase 2 looks for signs it works, and phase 3 compares it with standard care in hundreds or thousands of patients. A trial in people is step 3 on our ladder.
