Abraxane

Approval

What happened

The FDA approved Abraxane for breast cancer that has spread, the first of a new class of albumin-bound nanoparticle drugs.

Why it matters

The older form of paclitaxel is dissolved in a solvent that can cause dangerous allergic reactions, so patients first need steroids. The nanoparticle form doesn't need them.
