Microrobots

Animal study

What happened

ETH Zurich researchers reported in Science that they steered drug-carrying microrobots through the blood vessels of pigs and the brain fluid of a sheep; in more than 95% of tests the drug reached the right spot. Their next goal is trials in people.

Why it matters

It could deliver clot-dissolving drugs straight to a stroke, instead of through the whole body.

Working prototype

Magnetic microrobots for drug delivery is on step 2 of 5. Still years away; many prototypes stall here.
