Magnetic microrobots for drug delivery
A tiny gel capsule loaded with medicine and iron oxide nanoparticles is steered through blood vessels with magnets. At the target, a magnetic field heats the nanoparticles, the capsule dissolves, and the drug is released where it's needed.

The rule
Works beyond the first experiment: tested in animals, built as a device prototype, or made on a pilot production line.
- ETH Zurich researchers reported in Science that they steered drug-carrying microrobots through the blood vessels of pigs and the brain fluid of a sheep; in more than 95% of tests the drug reached the right spot. Their next goal is trials in people. ETH Zurich via EurekAlert, 13 Nov 2025
The short version
What you need to know
- Why it matters
It could deliver clot-dissolving drugs straight to a stroke, instead of through the whole body.
ETH Zurich via EurekAlert, 13 Nov 2025- Is it really nano?
Partly nano
The capsule itself is much larger than nano; the nanoparticles inside it are what make it steerable and let it release the drug.
ETH Zurich via EurekAlert, 13 Nov 2025- Who’s behind it
ETH Zurich (Multi-Scale Robotics Lab) and other labs
